Part One: Prep and Tack a 6″ Schedule 40 pipe

June 28th, 2018
By Dave Lynnes

In this video, I show how I prep and tack-up 6″ Sch. 40 pipe.
Both pieces of pipe are beveled at 37-1/2 deg., and the root face (land) is 1/8″. If you don’t grind a root face on the pipe, you could have a difficult time welding the root pass.
I like to use a 3/32″ root opening, but I know welders who prefer a 1/8″ root opening. You determine what works for you.
Set the 3/32″ or 1/8″ spacer wire between the two pieces of pipe, and put in 4 evenly spaced 3/4″ long tacks.
I usually set the welding machine around 80 amps when I’m taking up the pipe.
